Finely milled metallic pigments

Lithographic Metallic Inks

Metallic inks, built into the print.

Litho metallic inks use finely milled metallic pigments suspended in conventional inks, printed inline on our offset presses. Unlike foils, metallic inks integrate directly with the artwork, allowing tonal control, overprinting, and subtle metallic effects across large areas.

Lithographic Metallic Inks

Why Lithographic Metallic Ink matters

  • Integrated metallic colour – Metallic tones printed as part of the image, not applied after.
  • Subtle, sophisticated sheen – Less flash than foil, more nuance than flat ink.
  • Scales beautifully – Ideal for larger runs and full-sheet coverage.
  • Consistent reproduction – Stable results across long litho runs.

Creative Lithographic Metallic Inks

  • Golds, silvers and bronzes – From warm champagne to cool aluminium tones.
  • Overprint effects – Metallic inks combined with CMYK for custom shades.
  • Fine detail and solids – Clean text, rules and fills without stamping limits.
  • Brand-led restraint – Perfect where foil would be too loud.

What this unlocks for your project

  • Editorial covers with refined metallic accents.
  • Premium brochures with tonal metallic imagery.
  • Brand materials needing elegance, not shine overload.

Tech specs at a glance

  • Process – Offset lithographic printing
  • Inks – Metallic spot inks (silver, gold, bronze bases)
  • Coverage – Best suited to controlled areas rather than heavy solids
  • Stocks – Coated stocks preferred for smooth metallic lay

Design tips

  • Avoid very small reversed text in metallics.
  • Use spot colours, not CMYK builds.
  • Consider trapping where metallic meets flat colour.
  • Ask us about varnish to control rub resistance.

Lithographic Metallic Inks FAQ's

Essential tips and guidance to ensure your next project runs seamlessly.

How do metallic inks compare to foil?
Metallic inks are subtler and fully integrated into the print, whereas foil is a surface-applied embellishment with higher reflectivity.
Can metallic inks be overprinted with CMYK?
Yes, overprinting allows for tinted metallic effects and bespoke shades.
Are metallic inks suitable for large solids?
They can be, but coverage should be reviewed, very heavy solids may lose lustre.
